BY NIGHTFALL, the undead horde had devoured the entire population. Many tried to fight, and some even took a few of the monsters with them, but in the end, the monsters had the numbers. Sheriff Marto didn’t wake up until it was too late to save the town, but just in time to see Dilly Granmat and Barky Fillwin start tossing torches into the shuffling, gurgling crowd of hungry abominations. Unfortunately, their aim was less than impeccable. The Sheriff caught a torch in the torso and died enveloped by flame. The torches were a good idea, in fact, the only good idea that Dilly and Barky ever came up with together, though it was too little too late, and the dim-witted pair were overcome as well. A few villagers just ran as fast as they could in the opposite direction of the undead attackers, and a few of them managed to escape while their village, their former home, burned. Though Dilly and Barky were unable to save the village, the fire they set did manage to destroy a majority of the Zombies. Their dry, desiccated flesh and the rags they wore burst into flames. Smoke rose into the night sky, signaling the death of Butterby St. Cupsham. On the outskirts of the village, at the scene of the initial attack, small corpses with dead fingers began to twitch, grasping at wooden weapons they had made while they were living children. The newly risen Zombies shambled instinctively away from the flames rising from the village that had been their home when hearts still beat in their chests.
